DESIGNER & ESTIMATOR

We are currently seeking a Designer & Estimator to join the NCS Team in a challenging role.

Position Title: Designer & Estimator
Available Positions: One (1)
Start Date: As soon as possible
Terms of Employment:

  • Permanent Position – Full time
  • Hourly Position – 40 Hours a week
  • Wage – $40.24 – $42.24/hr or $84,000 – $85,000/yr

Role Summary
The Designer & Estimator will have a strong background · in estimating and/or designing within water management, construction, or industrial projects. This role involves designing, evaluating project specifications, preparing accurate estimates, and collaborating with various stakeholders to ensure successful project execution. The incumbent will play a crucial role in the bidding process and contribute to the overall profitability of our projects.

Key Responsibilities

1.     Project Estimating

  • Review sales bid, often with limited documentation, and extract technical requirements based on customer goals.
  • Analyze project specifications, drawings, and field conditions to develop comprehensive designs and proposals.
  • Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for equipment, materials, and labor based on system requirements, logistics, for water management projects.
  • Identify potential project risks and develop mitigation strategies in designs and project execution.

2.      System Design

  • Design efficient hydraulic systems for a range of applications including sewer bypasses, long distance water transfers, creek/river diversions, well point, deep well and eductor dewatering and water treatment.
  • Perform and document detailed hydraulic calculations to support system design.
  • Develop engineered system layouts including, but not limited to, pump sizing, pipe routing, and flow calculations.
  • Collaborate with project managers and field teams to ensure designs are practical and constructible.
  • Develop engineered drawings and flow models to verify the system will meet performance targets (flow rate, head pressure, etc.).
  • Conduct system capacity analysis and friction loss calculations.
  • Optimize designs for performance, safety, and cost-efficiency.
  • Provide engineered protocols and system designs that deliver on NCS’s value proposition: efficiency, environmental compliance, and cost effectiveness

3. Technical Support & Coordination

  • Prepare detailed engineered plans for client submission and third party-engineering review.
  • Ensure all designs meet regulatory and industry standards.
  • Create P & ID drawings that illustrate fluid system layout, equipment set up, and site-specific considerations.
  • Support the sales and operations teams with technical input during proposal and project execution phases.
  • Participate in pre-bid meetings, and client consultations as needed.
  • Gather and communicate market intelligence, competitor insights, and client feedback to inform system design strategies and pricing models.

4. Collaboration & Communication

  • Support the use of established best practices, templates, and procedures for estimating and design deliverables.
  • Compile client and colleague feedback to ensure pricing remains competitive and aligned with industry benchmarks.
  • Communicate effectively with internal operations, project managers, and leadership teams.
  • Contribute to standardization and documentation of estimating and design practices.

Qualifications & Competencies

  • Diploma or Degree in Engineering Technology, Civil/Mechanical/Geotechnical Engineering, or related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in estimating and/or designing within fluid systems, construction, groundwater control, mining operations, geotechnical surveying, or industrial projects.
  • Solid technical foundation in groundwater control systems, including design support, installation, and performance monitoring of dewatering systems (pumps, wellpoints, pipelines).
  • In-depth knowledge of deep well and eductor systems, with preference given to candidates who have hands-on, on-site installation experience.
  • Geotechnical data collection and analysis experience, including Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) and subsurface profiling to support risk assessments and construction planning is a plus.
  • Strong ability to perform flow calculations, pressure loss assessments, and pump/system sizing.
  • Strong knowledge of pumps, piping systems, flow dynamics, and related equipment.
  • Proficient with estimating software and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Visio) and all Microsoft communication software (Outlook, Microsoft Teams).
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and project documents.
  • Field experience in dewatering or fluid management is a strong asset.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to job sites as required.

Qualifications Preferred:

  • Designing experience in CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar)
  • Familiarity with fluid system components such as diesel/electric pumps, HDPE piping, valves, fittings, tanks, and filtration systems

Role Summary

As Director of Operations, you will lead and supervise all regional operational, financial, safety, and people-related aspects of NCS’s projects. Your role is critical in ensuring that projects are delivered on time, within budget, safely, and with high quality—while achieving financial targets. You will also ensure customer satisfaction through rigorous process discipline (e.g. LEM generation, signoffs, cost accuracy) and maintain compliance and safety across all field and site operations. You will play a critical role in driving both execution and strategy, working closely with field teams, project managers, finance, and sales to ensure seamless service delivery, client satisfaction, and profitability

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and oversee all regional operational, financial, safety, and people-related aspects of projects, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Ensure regional projects are delivered on time, within scope, budget, and quality standards.
  • Support bid strategy discussions by providing technical input, ensuring competitive and compliant proposals.
  • Drive operational efficiency through scheduling, resource allocation, and workforce planning.
  • Ensure accuracy in Labor, Equipment, and Material (LEM) tracking, customer signoffs, and compliance prior to invoicing.
  • Oversee all related expense records (e.g., receiving tickets), ensuring they are properly closed and marked as completed in a timely manner.
  • Monitor project performance, budgets, and timelines, implementing corrective actions as needed.
  • Meet or exceed revenue, gross margin, and EBITDA targets through disciplined project execution and cost control.
  • Collaborate with Finance on cost tracking, revenue recognition, forecasting, and operational alignment.
  • Implement KPIs and operational metrics to improve margins, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
  • Support Sales and Business Development with operational insights, project data, and field intelligence.
  • Champion health, safety, and environmental compliance, ensuring adherence to policies and regulations.
  • Lead, mentor, and manage project managers, field supervisors, and technicians, fostering a high-performance culture.
  • Oversee employee lifecycle activities, including hiring, onboarding, training, performance management, and succession planning.
  • Support staff evaluation and development systems to promote accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure client satisfaction through rigorous process discipline, standards adherence, and proactive communication.

Competencies & Qualifications Required:

  • Minimum 5+ years in a leadership, project management or operations management role (preferably in energy, construction, pump/water management or a related field).
  • Education – bachelor’s degree.
  • Familiarity with fluid system components such as diesel/electric pumps, HDPE piping, valves, fittings, tanks, and filtration systems.
  • Strong understanding of fluid mechanics and pumping system design is a plus.
  • Essential knowledge of operating and managing pumps brands like Global, BBA and Selwood is an advantage.
  • Must have previous experience managing projects related to oil and gas applications including Trans Mountain, Woodfibre LNG, and Trans Canada Pipeline.
  • Previous experience dealing with pump manufacturers and distributors across North America is a plus.
  • Proven track record of managing P&L, budgets, and achieving EBITDA targets.
  • Strong understanding of project execution, financial forecasting, and operational controls; 4CastPlus software experience is a strong asset.
  • In-depth knowledge of health and safety practices, including hazard identification, incident management and FLHA protocols.; knowledge of SiteDocs tool is a plus.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), operational reporting tools, and LEM systems.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive performance in a fast-paced environment.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel regionally as required.
